Magpie Tales # 128 - Chiaroscuro

Zeljko Nedic photographer, Black Dog

                                                              Chiaroscuro

Recessed inside shadowy lairs,
Deception dances
Light and lithe, like a bow
Drawn with spirited intent
Across the strings of a violin.

Lit from above, your luminous halo
Implying ignorance
Of  the lingering spirits
Drawn with dread and dark intent.
From inside this whirl of rhapsodies.

The empty boot, a tell-tale sign
Of  death descending,
And the black cloak disguising
Your angelic countenance, seeks protection
Only from the black dog.

This classic violin piece holds the spirit of light and dark, played with all the drama and intensity
chiaroscuro lighting seeks to portray.

    1. Berowne,

Chiaroscuro goes back to the middle ages and was used in painting back then to create drama and to signify good and evil characters. This backlight technique caused a halo effect on the good figure while evil characters were left out in the darker areas. Vermeer used it for highly dramatic effect in his art. The photographer here uses it too, but also includes a black hood to change the effect somewhat. Thank you for coming by and I hope this 'sheds some light' on the use of this technique.=D

  11. Brian,

The lighting technique is a powerful one and I felt it needed to be matched with my words. It was fun to try to relate the photography to good and evil. Thank you for stopping in to leave this very kind message, Brian. =D

  12. Very powerful l this is a place where Angels fear to tread, yet tread they must ! , or disaster waits , thanks . I think the black cloak kind of suits him

    1. Kutamun,

Thank you for coming by and leaving your powerful thinking. That black cloak (hoodie) does suit him and it dulls the impact of the bright overhead light, which I guess is better for photography. Less glare. Yay for Angels!! =D

    1. Tess,

Chiaroscuro is a wonderful word, isn't it? The lighting technique inspired my poem. It's difficult for me to think of Caravaggio loving my work... that YOU love what I wrote is enough. Thank you kindly, lovely lady. =D

    1. DCW,

I was bothered by a single boot sitting there and I wondered if it was significant? I found the 'death' reference and went with it. It really fit the dark recesses of chiaroscuro. Thank you kindly for leaving 'deep' comments. =D
