The Fossil Fuel Mandate Blues

taylor, jason decaires

I've got the Fossil Fuel Mandate Blues,
I heard the broadcast on the evening news...
The Arctic ice is melting but I wonder who will care?
It's releasing tons of methane gas into the Arctic air.
The herds of caribou are declining in their numbers
But the mandate here in Ottawa really is a bummer
And northward near the tar sands, between the carbon and the spills
Many local residents are sick or gravely ill
The fallout from your policies are getting to me too,
I've got the Fossil Fuel Mandate Blues.

I've got the Fossil Fuel Mandate Blues
We dissed Kyoto on the late night news....
Our ambassadors pulled out and caught Durban by surprise
Without our country's signature, the oceans waters rise
The island archipelagos are starting to submerge
The mandate here in Ottawa really is a scourge
And southward in the ocean, some people worked with clay
They sculpted figures in the water, expressing their dismay
There are no signs of mandate changes, not even on the news,
I've got the Fossil Fuel Mandate blues.

The mandate means to sell our crude to China
We need some tankers and a lengthy pipe
They claim the chance of accidents is minor,
I'm weary and run down from all this hype.

I've got the Fossil Fuel Mandate Blues,
I read the headlines in the daily news...
Make some reparations.
Yes, it's kind of late to start....
But the earth needs a NEW mandate, needs some help and needs your heart.
Sign on to the Accord now, Ottawa can be the change,
Create some eco energy.... see what can be arranged.
And northward near the tar sands, beneath the permafrost
There will be new beginnings, making up for what was lost.
Sea water will decline once more.
I'll see it on the news,
And no longer will I need to sing
The Fossil Fuel Mandate Blues.

  3. Wow! You're here, loud and clear! Love this one, Linda...wish you didn't have to write it, but love that you could and did. Welcome back!

  4. Also, I have Pete Seeger's "Quite Early Morning" in my head now, and that's a beautiful thing :-) It's not early anymore, or even morning, but I still hope for a day when we won't have to sing these blues.

  5. Carolina Linthead,
I wish I knew how to write the music notes to go with it. I guess I will always be a lyricist. There is too much in my little life at this stage to start taking up an instrument!! I am hoping the PM is beginning to see the light. He actually mumbled something about environmentalists on the news the other day, but he dismissed it really quickly and stuck to his guns about the importance of the deal with China. *sigh* I am thrilled you stopped by today!! =D

  8. I love this! So timely and perfect. One of my favorites for sure. I wish they would drop the Keystone Pipeline plans into a bottomless pit and come them with tar sands! I hope it isn't too late for a new beginning. Have a great week. I like your blog.

  20. Ain't that the sad truth?! So nice to see you over at my place, Linda. I just finished reading a novel by a Canadian writer (Jean McNeil), called "Ice Lovers". It's all about this very thing (gets fairly bogged down in the story, but worth a go if you're keen on the subject as a backdrop to a romance/mystery/spiritual exercise.

I don't know if I every said this after Barry's death, but I so enjoyed getting to know him through his blog and the Sepia Saturday experience. He was a good and gentle soul and his heart shone through in every word he shared. He is one of many who fill my prayers.

What I cannot do is write the music.... neither can I play music. Thank you for the vote of confidence. I love writing lyrics.... is there anyone out there who loves writing music notes? Thank you for visiting Jo!! xoxo
