Soldier, Welcome Home from Afghanistan

Ode to Remembrance
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them. Laurence Binyon

The battle in Afghanistan is coming to a close and the soldiers are returning home, except for some troops who need to stay behind to keep the peacemaking stable and to train the new Afghani recruits. It is good news for Canada that we are able to pull out some of our military personal. Mommies and daddies are reunited and children all over Canada get their parents back. Yay!!

It's been a long dirty war for us, especially with the road mines. We lost many heroes in armored tanks patrolling the Afghanistan roadways only to get blown up. One hundred and fifty-eight soldiers were killed during this mission.

On this Remembrance Day, I would like to thank all of Canada's Armed Forces for standing up and protecting us from aggression and intimidation when it happens. You put yourselves in harms way and I am grateful. To all of my relatives and relatives of my friends, present and past, who lost your lives in battle, and those who came home from war wounded and scarred, I am thankful for your bravery.

I have included in this blog, a song from Bob Reid to welcome all of you home. It's a hopeful song to sing on Remembrance Day. The mission is over. Peace returns.

  5. It is a happy day indeed, when soldiers come home.

John and I lived in Afghanistan as Peace Corps volunteers many years ago, and the ongoing violence there has been hard for us to watch.
