"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy."
-St. Francis
I went to the Catholic web site to look up saints tonight. All Saints Day has dawned and I am not Catholic, and I don't know very much about saints. I was kind of interested in female saints because I wondered if there were many. Oh my, yes there are!!!
At the site, there is a very long list of female saints, so rather vainly, I looked up Linda. Sorry. There is not ONE female saint named Linda. No Saint Linda. Ha, that's okay. I have a middle name... Diane. Sorry. There is not one female saint named Diane. Yes, there is Diana, but not a Saint Diane.
My sister Margaret Anne is much more fortunate. There is a plethora of St. Margarets and two St. Annes. Even my friend Gladys has a saint name! Then I wondered, if a person has a saint that they are named after, are they required to emulate the qualities of that saint? Perhaps I am lucky that I am not required to emulate saintly deeds.
Oh sure, people have used the expression, "You're a saint, Linda!" when they are appreciative of something I did, but most of what I do never feels particularly saintly to me. I just do things that need done.
Since I love trees and birds so much, I do admire St. Francis of Assisi. He of course was not a female, but he is always referenced as a naturalist. During his life 1181-1226, he took a vow of poverty and apparently died while reading Psalm 141. It would feel strange to think of myself as a "Francis" and not a "Linda". However, I am being vain since I can think of nothing I have done so extraordinary in my life that would qualify me to even be considered for sainthood.
Take some time to enjoy "All Saints Day" today and it is interesting to consider saintly acts that are interesting or acts you may aspire to emulate. The Jazz standard,"When the Saints Go Marching In" is always associated with Louis Armstrong. Louis IS a saint name. There is a St. Louis.... a city in the midwest of America, named after the actual saint, who was kind to the poor and a patron of medieval art. I consider Louis Armstrong to also have saintly qualities and he definitely would be "in their number" when the saints go marching in. The rendition of the song I have posted today includes Danny Kaye and is an upbeat and fun version. Enjoy.

I am not a Catholic but find it annoying that making Mother Theresa a saint is taking so long! If anyone lived a saintly live it was her. Now I must go look up my name and see if I have a Saint with my name.
ReplyDeleteTabor, It DOES take forever to become a saint. But you are right about Mother Theresa and for better reasons than some of the saints I looked up yesterday. Some did very little in comparison. Unfortunately, I do not remember seeing a St. Tabor on the list I was looking at... so you and I may not be in "their number" for the march in. BUT.... their isn't a natural photography saint yet. Keep at it.... you never know. Hope you are feeling better. xo
ReplyDeleteI think I looked my name up a long time ago, and I'm in the same club as you and Tabor. But you know, that makes me so happy!
ReplyDeleteI adore Louis Armstrong.
Kerry, Along with you and Tabor it feels like the best kind of club! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThe reason I liked this video so much is because it doesn't feel too orchestrated. It's like voices are dancing together and feeling the steps as they go along. It's so happy and full of energy. I love Louis Armstrong too. Thank you for coming by and leaving happy energy here. =D
When I went to Mass this morning, the sermon was about all the unknown saints. Saints are supposed to provide us with examples of a good and holy life that we can emulate, so if you'd like to be more like St. Francis, go for it!
ReplyDeleteKathy, I am interested in St. Francis of Assisi because of his connection to nature. I love to garden, to feed the birds, to create a natural environment around myself that is inviting to birds, squirrels etc. Thank you for stopping in to add your approval. =D
ReplyDeleteI'm not Catholic either, so I have nothing to contribute, but I thought I'd say hello anyway.
ReplyDeleteAnvilcloud, Hello IS such a contribution!!! Thank you for stopping in and saying so. =D
ReplyDeleteHi Linda,
ReplyDeleteAre you back into blogging? It's been a long time.
Can you believe it, it is only this week that I facebooked with Reggie girl, and she spoke of the time when she and barry were sick.
We haven't forgotten you.
Ann
Ann, I am in and out of blogging. I am trying to blog on a regular basis, but there is only me at home now and lots of caretaking to do, so I really don't have the time to commit to this everyday. I blog when I can, I facebook more frequently because it's quicker. I was away in September and I didn't do any blogging. In the summer I had eye surgery..... cateracts, so I wasn't blogging then either. It's great to hear from you!!! Thanks for stopping by today.
