Democracy must be something more than *three wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner. James Bovard
Do you remember Raffi? He sang a plethora of children's songs and Heather and her sister Kathy spent their young childhood singing and dancing to the songs of Raffi. We listened on records back then. We had two Raffi thirty three and a thirds.
Altogether, there were 35 songs on these two albums. Nineteen on the first album and sixteen on the second album. We shared our recordings with the nursery school and they shared theirs with us. Heather and Kathy LOVED these songs. Favourites were, "Five Green and Speckled Frogs", "Shake My Sillies Out", "Wheels on the Bus" and "Robin in the Rain".
You can find a selection of Raffi songs if you want to listen, on you tube here
After we moved back to Toronto, we lived uptown at Yonge and Bloor in the Uof T married students residences, affordable housing. Barry got his masters and I worked at Pizza, Pizza (nights) to help support the family. Times were tight, but we persevered. Our two girls started going to a full day nursery school programme at St. Andrew's Church, just down the street from where we lived. And one day, Raffi came to visit that nursery school! Baby Heather was "awestruck"! Raffi invited her over to sit on his lap while he sang her one of his new songs that we didn't know. It was a memorable moment for all of us, even though there was no picture taking allowed.
From there, Raffi books came out with pictures and words to all of his songs. You could sing the songs while reading the books. Now, Kathy's daughter Hailey has "The Wheels on the Bus" and we were singing it all together just a couple of weeks ago. My all time Raffi favorite song will always be "Baby Beluga". I still have a hard cover copy of that song book. It is worn and has been well used. It is missing a page, but it is a very loved book! The money Raffi got from producing that song, went to help the plight of the Beluga Whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They were all dying of pollution and cancer, even back in the 1980's and 1990's. Raffi is an inspiration to people who want to sing meaningful songs for children, for people who care about our earth and for people who care about keeping a sense of community in their neighborhoods.
So what did I find on Heather's facebook page this morning?
Today, Raffi has a message for all of the Canadians who grew up listening to his songs. He wants all of you to "Get Out and Vote on May 2nd". He is not saying he supports any particular party, he just wants you to vote. If you want to keep a democracy in Canada, voting is important. Grown-up Heather and I think voting is important too.
Even though most Canadians say they are voting for one of the *three wolves, my vote is going with the sheep. * the original quote had two wolves

Our kids listened to Raffi too, and there are times when "Wheels On The Bus" still run through my head (perhaps a mixed blessing!) Raffi is a national treasure for you, and I am glad he is still out there with his message of mindfulness. My favorite Raffi song is "Thanks A Lot."
ReplyDeleteKerry, "Thanks A Lot" is a great song! Raffi IS a national treasure here in Canada and I am glad he is still out there too. He hasn't lost his singing voice much. "Everything Grows" and "All I Really Need" are two other Raffi songs we sing at school during sing alongs. Thanks for stopping in today, Kerry. =D
ReplyDeleteI love Raffi, heard him sing to the "grown ups" on the news today.
ReplyDeleteLove your loyalty to Ms. Green Linda, she does care about the environment more so than the other parties....I still haven't made up my mind, I wish I could take bits of all of them but we don't get that choice. I am not fussy about the others but I have never missed voting, it is very important to me.....:-)Hugs
Perhaps you could help track down the Raffi CD that has disappeared from our car. Nikki Dee really liked it before it vanished. Shall I leave it up to you, then? :)
ReplyDeleteMy personal favorite was Baby Beluga, too, but with three sons in the car? I heard this song three million times...at LEAST!
ReplyDelete♪ "Joshua Giraffe
Was born in a zoo
and lived there, too,
for two years and a half,
he never had a bath..." ♪
CD? What's that? I only had Raffi's wonderful music on cassette tapes!
Great post, Linda. Thanks for the memory! ♥
I wish Raffi were running for office!
Bernie, Listening to the candidates at local meetings I feel a little like I want to stop Stephen Harper and the only way to do that is to vote Liberal. But I care so much about the environment and the only party who even mentions the environment is the Green Party so I have to vote for them.
ReplyDeleteI wish all Canadians treasured their right to vote as much as you and I do, Bernie. Thank you for coming by to lend support to the cause. Your comments are very much appreciated. ♥
AnvilCloud, Please tell me what is the Raffi CD Nikki Dee loves so much that has vanished from your car and I will certainly get to work on it. There are hundreds of possible songs. But, absolutely I will try, for darling Nikki Dee, anything. ♥ =D
ReplyDeleteJo, I really think the government could use a guy like Raffi. He knows how to bring people together for the common good, even if it requires a guitar and sheet music!!! Joshua Giraffe could be a big hit on parliament hill or in congress. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad both of us were "hip" enough in the good old days to not admit to owning 8 track tapes of Raffi. CD's and records.... the way to go.
I'm glad you enjoyed this post and I am happy you had a chance to reconnect with Raffi. ♥
What a wonderful picture of the four of you. Barry is quite dashing in that photo. A message like that can touch that generation that demographic studies say does not vote, at least here in America. Good for Raffi and good for Canada.
ReplyDeleteRaffi was not part of our household, sadly. Love seeing the sweet family photo! x
ReplyDeleteTabor, Barry carried this picture around in his wallet all these many years. Barry, like his Uncle Ted was dashing...... yes, he was.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping many of Raffi's followers (now grown up) will be influenced by his new message and it will indeed be good for Canada!! Thank you for stopping by today and leaving your kind thoughts. =D
Tess, The family photo was taken in 1977. My mom just came back from Vegas with the wonderful American Cotton dresses for the girls. Kathy's had lovely smocking on the front and Heather's had original Pooh characters. Thank you for visiting and leaving a little love here. x
ReplyDeleteok, did not recognize him initially by name but after hitting the links yeah i know him...and you have to vote...at least you have a say even if it is between lesser evils...
ReplyDeleteBrian, I agree with the importance of voting and I am glad you recognized Raffi. Thank you for visiting, and leaving your thoughtful comments. They are very much appreciated. =D
ReplyDeleteI always vote but it never seems to do any good regardless of who gets elected. it's ponderous and by the time any change finally gets going, there's another election that puts the skids on it.
ReplyDeletethanks for stopping by and joining me in my head.
Ellen, I know voting never seems to do any good but you are right to keep trying. Participating in democracy is the only way to improve it.
ReplyDeleteI am glad I stopped by to join you in your head. There are valuable insights and ideas there. Thanks for sharing them and also for visiting here. =D
